Chapter Nine

Lexie lifted her head off of Quade’s shoulder where she’d been dozing until a few seconds ago. The clock said four. It was late afternoon. She needed to get up and fix them something to eat for dinner. She had no doubt they would be hungry. She needed to think, too, and couldn’t do that surrounded by them.

She explored her options on getting out of the bed without waking them and figured her best bet was to crawl down to the foot of the bed and slide off. She moved her legs and arms away from the men and slowly slipped down the bed to the foot where she carefully got off the edge. She stood still for several seconds to be sure they weren’t going to wake up. Then she grabbed her clothes and dressed as quietly as possible.

In less than five minutes, she was in the kitchen fixing a pot of coffee and deciding on what to fix to eat. She decided on something simple and easy. She quickly gathered the ingredients for spaghetti and made the sauce to simmer until they woke up. She turned it down low and took her coffee outside on the back porch. She chose a rocking chair and rocked while she sipped the hot liquid. It was still quite hot outside, but she needed the caffeine to wake up and to clear her head so she could go over what had happened back in the bedroom earlier.

You’re in so much trouble, Lexie. Now that you’ve slept with them once, they are going to expect it all the time.

Was that what she wanted? Did she want to have a sexual relationship with them while she worked for them? What happened when they were tired of her? Would she lose her job, her home?

Then there was the nagging thought in the back of her mind that she could easily fall in love with them. They treated her like a queen and hadn’t raised a hand against her. She had no illusions that it could change in an instant, though. It had in the past. She just didn’t trust that they were any different than any other man she had dated.

But what if they were? What if they were truly serious about her and didn’t abuse her or treat her like a doormat? Didn’t she owe it to herself to stick around and find out? The more she thought about it, the more questions cropped up. She wasn’t really getting any closer on figuring out what she needed to do. Maybe she should do nothing for the time being.

She wasn’t sure how long she had sat out there, but she had finished her coffee and was mostly just rocking when Jared walked outside with a cup. He smiled at her and walked over to lean in for a kiss. She didn’t pull away, so maybe she had made up her mind to see where things went.

“How are you feeling?”

“I’m fine. Supper should be ready whenever Quade is ready.
